Quail Eggs

The following is a real life story told by M.Ö., shared here with his permission.

Bir gün bizim bir amcamızın bir manavı vardı, benim dükkanımın karşısında. Böyle oturuyok 6 7 kişi falan. Amcamın da o gün köyden yeğeni gelmiş. Yeğeninin de boğazı ağrıyor. Yani boğaz rahatsızdan dolayı buraya gelmiş. Neyse, bundan önce de amcama bıldırcın yumurtası diye bir adam yumurta satmış. Üç tane yumurta vermiş. Amcam o zaman tanesi 2 lira mı 3 lira mı almış tanesine… bıldırcın yumurtası diye.

Şimdi bıldırcın yumurtası boğaza iyi gelir, böyle boğazı yumuşatır, ses tonunu falan düzeltir. Her neyse, amcamla işte oturuyorduk böyle ortamda. 10 kişi olduk. Baktım dedi ki… “yeğenim” dedi, “Al” dedi, “sana üç tane yumurta. Bunları iç, senin boğazın iyileşir” dedi. “Bana [adamın] bir tanesi getirmişti, bir adam getirmiş.”

Neyse, amcamın yeğeni yumurta eline aldı, yumurtaları birbirine vuruyor. Amcam ona diyor “onu kıracan,” diyor, “dur” diyor.

“Ya amca,” diyor, “Bunlar plastik” diyor.

“Nasıl plastik?” diyor. Amcam eline bir alıyor. “Allah allah… plastik.”

“Amca” dedi, “peki bunu bilemedin mi plastik olduğunu?”

“Yok” diyor, “Bana da adamın bir tanesi verdi” diyor.

English Translation

One day, one of our uncles had a fruit and vegetable stand right across from my shop. We’re sitting there, about 6 or 7 of us. That day, his nephew had come from the village. His nephew had a sore throat. He had come because his throat was hurting. Anyway, before this, a man had sold eggs to my uncle – quail eggs. He gave him three eggs. My uncle had bought them, each for 2 or 3 lira or something… thinking they were quail eggs.

Now, quail eggs are good for the throat – they soften the throat, they can help with your voice. Anyway, we were sitting there with my uncle. At this point we were about 10 people. He said… “nephew,” he said, “Here,” he said, “take these three eggs. Drink these, your throat will get better,” he said. “A man brought them to me.”

Anyway, my uncle’s nephew took the eggs in his hand, and he started hitting the eggs against each other. My uncle tells him, “you’re going to break it,” he says, “stop.”

“But uncle,” he says, “These are plastic,” he says.

“How can they be plastic?” he says. My uncle takes it in his hand. “My goodness… they are plastic.”

“Uncle,” he said, “didn’t you know these were plastic?”

“No,” he says, “A man had brought them to me,” he says.
